Pope Francis’ presence in the life of the church was a blessing. His passing on Easter Monday is poignant as it follows Easter Sunday, the very center of our Catholic faith. Pope Francis was a sign and source of hope for people throughout the world, particularly the forgotten, the poor, the sick and the voiceless. And it was most fitting that he was present with the faithful on Easter Sunday in St. Peter’s Square, as being close to the people of God is among his greatest gifts. This was the culmination of his life and a call to holiness. He never lost hope in the goodness of people. He never lost faith in the mercy of God.
